What’s In A Name?

What’s In A Name? Years ago, I visited the Holy Land with a tour group. On one stop on the tour, north of Galilee, we visited the place where Jesus took his disciples on retreat. The event is found in Matthew 16:13-15:

When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?” They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”

By the time our tour group arrived at Caesarea Philippi, it was after dark. Our group circled around a fire, singing songs, and shared testimonies. I enjoyed the worship and camaraderie, but also felt the need to be alone in this place. I wondered off.

In the moonlight, filtering through a grove of trees, I found the place where a spring bubbled up from under the mountain. The little spring was and is the source of the Jordan River. There were niches carved into the stone of the base of the mountain. When Jesus visited this place with his disciples, the niches housed images of pagan gods. It is quite possible that this was the place where Jesus asked the question, “Who do you say that I am?”

Jesus is asking, “Who do you say that I am?” You have been asking Jesus the same question, “Who do you say that I am?” Before you share the answer to your question, let’s take time to answer Jesus’ question.

In the Bible we find many names to describe Jesus. Below is a list of twenty descriptions, names, of Jesus. I invite you to choose a title (name) of Christ that is especially meaningful for you. Carry the name of Jesus with you in all you do this day.
