Jesus and the Powers that Be

The Magi confronted Herod with a fearful question, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews” (Matt. 2:1).

The announcement of the birth of Jesus to Mary, Joseph, and the Shepherds was met with worship and adoration.

Now, for the first time, the birth of Jesus is announced to power, Herod’s power.

Herod pretends to worship, “Go and search carefully for the child” he instructs the Magi, “As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him” (Matt. 2:8).

Power in the palace is terrified because Herod knows: The New King intends to rule over me and my kingdom.”  Exactly!
