Guess Who’s Coming to the Manger? (The Wise Men)

God does as He deems best, but it is a bit of a stretch to send astrologers to the birth of Christ.  These Magi (Wise Men) were men of magic and science; the two were combined by most at their time in history.  Yet, God hooked the wise men with a star and reeled them into a new life, the life of Jesus.  The Wise Men present a threefold challenge for all who follow Jesus.

First, the call to adventure.  Life in Christ is a grand venture, a journey, a grand undertaking.  The call of Christ may not be comfortable, but it is exciting and demanding.

Second, the call to think.  There are those who take the call of Christ as a mindless submission.  I have found that following Christ demands my best thinking and my best thoughts.

Third, the call to the nations.  The purpose of God in Christ went wider than the nation of Israel from the beginning.  The Wise Men represent the world coming to Jesus (Matthew 2:1-12) as we are sent to disciple the world (Matthew 28:19-20).
